Requirements Capture & Management

Identify & Prioritize Customer Requirements

Requirements Capture & Management is about identifying and prioritizing customer requirements, deriving technical requirements, and verifying that those requirements are met by the product design. Requirements Capture & Management is performed primarily by marketing and systems engineering, but the information generated during this process is consumed by all roles in the product development process. Requirements are often managed in Word or Excel files - disconnected from product design data and the rest of the product development team. This leads to poor communication of customer requirements to engineering, inability to verify that product designs meet customer needs, and inability to trace product designs back to requirements - leading to poor decisions during change assessment and difficulty implementing product reuse strategies.

Product failures because customer needs are unmet is driving leading product manufacturers to focus on the Requirements Capture & Management process as a source of competitive advantage. They seek to manage requirements integrally with product data and to establish traceability between all levels of requirements and the design data that describes the implementation and testing of those requirements.

PTC's Product Development System (PDS) provides a central repository for requirements documents that support revision history, library services, workflow and routing, document templates and change notification. Collaboration capabilities provide secure, globally accessible, roles-based workspaces for sharing and collaborating on requirements at any point in the process. An open architecture - including a pre-built adapter to Telelogic DOORS - enables requirements managed in external systems to be linked to product data managed by PTC's Product Development System.
